Specialized Support for Food and Body Concerns

Sunrise Nutrition supports adults navigating a wide range of eating disorders, disordered eating, and food-related mental health concerns.

Eating Patterns and Behaviors

We work with individuals experiencing a variety of eating-related challenges, including restriction, rigid food rules, binge eating, and the shame cycles that often accompany it. Support is also available for purging or compensatory behaviors, chronic dieting, feeling out of control around food, and difficulty maintaining consistent eating patterns.

Food and Body Distress

Many clients come to us struggling with food anxiety, fear foods, or ongoing body image distress. You may find yourself engaging in body checking or avoiding your body altogether, difficulty navigating social situations, feeling guilt, shame, or self-criticism after eating, or fearing weight and body changes. We also support people who feel disconnected from their bodies or have difficulty feeling safe, comfortable, or present in their physical selves.

Mental Health Patterns

Food and body concerns are often connected to broader emotional and mental health experiences. We help clients navigate anxiety related to food, body image, or health, as well as perfectionism and all-or-nothing thinking. Therapy may also address emotional triggers and urges, relationship stress connected to food or appearance, social avoidance, and the development of coping skills that support long-term recovery and relapse prevention.

Why Eating Disorder Therapy Matters

For many people, food and body concerns are not only nutrition problems. They are often deeply connected to underlying experiences such as anxiety, depression, trauma, perfectionism, identity, relationship stress, life transitions, medical experiences, and long-standing coping strategies that once helped you get through something difficult.

You may find yourself thinking about food constantly, feeling disconnected from your body, avoiding social situations, struggling with guilt after eating, or feeling like you should be able to just stop a pattern that keeps coming back.

These experiences are not signs of failure. They are signs that something deserves care.

Eating disorder therapy creates space for something deeper than behavior change alone. At Sunrise Nutrition, our therapists are specially trained to get to the “root” of what is driving your relationship with food and body—whether that is anxiety that has never had enough room to be understood, depression that has dulled connection and motivation, trauma that still lives in the nervous system, relationship dynamics that shape safety and self-worth, or life transitions that have disrupted your sense of stability and identity.

This work is not just about identifying thoughts and emotions that trigger behaviors. It is about sitting with you in a human, relational space where your story can be understood with warmth, curiosity, and clinical skill. Over time, therapy helps you make sense of patterns in a way that feels compassionate rather than corrective—so healing is not just about changing what you do, but understanding why it has been so hard, and what you actually need in order to feel more grounded, connected, and free.

Ways Eating Disorder Therapy Can Help

Therapy offers a space to gently explore the emotional layers that often sit beneath food and body concerns—things like shame after eating, anxiety around food or body changes, and the ways certain patterns may have developed as a way of coping or getting through difficult experiences. Rather than focusing only on behavior change, this work invites curiosity about what your urges, avoidance, body checking, or comparison might be communicating, and how these patterns have helped you navigate stress, relationships, or moments of overwhelm.

Over time, therapy can support a deepening sense of self-understanding and self-compassion, including how you relate to your body and care for yourself in moments that feel hard or tender. Many clients find that as they feel more understood and supported in therapy, new ways of responding begin to emerge—ones that feel less driven by fear or shame and more grounded in choice and care.

At Sunrise Nutrition, therapy is grounded in a whole-person, weight-inclusive approach. We believe your worth is not measured by your body size, eating patterns, health history, or how together you feel when you reach out.

The Connection Between Eating Disorders and Body Image

For many people, eating disorders and disordered eating do not exist separately from body image concerns. How you feel about your body can influence your food decisions, social experiences, self-esteem, relationships, movement, and daily decision-making in ways that are difficult to untangle.

Even when food-related struggles are the primary reason someone seeks support, body image distress is often part of the picture. You may find yourself constantly checking your appearance, avoiding social situations where your body feels exposed, having difficulty shopping, comparing yourself to others, or feeling like your worth is tied to how your body looks.

Because body image and eating concerns are so closely connected, therapy includes space to explore both.

Body Image Therapy in Seattle

Body image distress can be painful and deeply disruptive. It can shape how you feel about yourself, what you wear, where you go, what you eat, how you move, how you show up in relationships, and how safe you feel being seen.

For many people, the deeper hope in body image therapy is not just to “think differently” about their body, but to actually feel more at home in it—to move through daily life with less mental noise, less shame, and more ease. Clients often want to feel comfortable in their bodies, reduce the weight of self-criticism, and stop having their body take up so much emotional, mental, and heart space.

Body image therapy is not about convincing yourself to love every part of your body every day. It is about reducing the fear, shame, avoidance, and self-criticism that can make life feel smaller, and helping you reconnect with a sense of freedom in how you live, move, and relate to yourself.

At Sunrise Nutrition, body image therapy in Seattle supports adults who want a more compassionate and less punishing relationship with their bodies. This work may include exploring comparison, body checking, avoidance, perfectionism, identity, food rules, movement anxiety, and the beliefs you have learned about what bodies are supposed to be.

Our approach is weight-inclusive, nonjudgmental, and rooted in dignity. You deserve care that respects your body now, not only if it changes.

Sunrise Nutrition offers therapy through mental health providers who understand that food and body concerns are rarely just about food. Therapy is available as a standalone service, and when helpful, it can be coordinated with nutrition counseling for clients who would benefit from integrated support.

Integrated Therapy + Nutrition Support

Eating disorder recovery often needs more than one kind of support. Food and body concerns can involve trauma responses, emotional patterns, nervous system regulation, eating behaviors, nutritional needs, shame cycles, medical experiences, identity, relationships, and learned coping strategies.

At Sunrise Nutrition, therapy and nutrition counseling can work together so care feels connected instead of fragmented. You do not have to carry your story between disconnected providers or choose between mental health support and food support.

Some clients start with therapy. Some start with nutrition counseling. Many benefit from both. During your Complimentary Consultation, we will talk through what you are experiencing and help you understand what kind of support may be the best fit.
